Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): check, volt bulb, volt source

Question
hi, how are you? i have couple of questions regarding to auto electric.

how to check any electrical component if it's no good in your car. such as alternator, starter, wiper motor, etc. (and which equipment or meter to use in order to check any electrical in the car)
can you also please suggest any good websites where i can learn about auto electric and electric trouble shooting. thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Asif,

I use a few basic tools.  A test light, that shows when you have power to any given wire or terminal.  You can buy one or use any 12 volt bulb and socket with test leads.  A volt meter, although not as easy or fast as a test light, will also test for continuity, amp draw and give voltage readings.  Radio Shack carries them as well as some auto supply or electrical houses.  To test motors, including a starter, I just jump them with test leads or cables from the battery or any 12 volt source having sufficiant amps.
Sorry, I don't know of a website to point you to for info.  I would do an online search.

Good Luck,
Michael
