Steering Column Repair: Steering column will not lock, ford steering column, steering column repair

Question
1998 Grand Marquis steering locked. Got it to unlock but now ignition does not work, dash lights are on, etc. Bought a new key ignition cylinder but same result. Felt like the locking steering might have broken when I couldnt get it to unlock. Please help.

Answer
Hi:
Sorry about your car.  If the key just rotates freely, it sounds like you have a broken rack actuator gear.  The pin comes out on one end disconnecting the linkage.  We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the upper portion of a Ford steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website (for a small fee). Although the example is for a Ford Mustang, the column is identical to yours http://www.steeringcolumnservices.com/steering-column-repair-how-to-instructions...

I hope these instructions can help you.  Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply locate the part and you can purchase it directly through the shopping cart.  We stock just about everything you would need to repair your car properly.
Good luck
