Steering Column Repair: Ignition Gear, 1995 chevrolet corsica, chevrolet corsica

Question
I have a 1995 Chevrolet Corsica with tilt wheel. I was having a ignition switch problem and bought a new lock ass. I remover the wheel, and all the wiper and blinker parts along with the lock plate. I discovered that it wasnt the switch but a gear that snapped going deeper into the column. I think that I need to take the tilt column off but to this, it says that I need a special tool and that its not possible for the home mechanic. Please Help!!!

Answer

ignition rack gear
Hi Cody
You have a broken rack actuator.  This is a common problem on that vehicle and in order to repair it, you will need to remove the column from the car, and remove the rack gear form the bottom.  You do not need to remove the tilt housing.  you have gone as far as you need to on the upper end.  You will need to align the teeth with a new lock cylinder when you install the new rack.
Just be careful of the airbag and clockspring.  Make sure you put the column back in the exact same position you took it out and you do not rotate the wheel while it is out.

I have enclosed a picture for you to see the part you need.  My company sells them if you cannot find one at a dealer near you.  They are a dealer item only.
