Steering Column Repair: how to remove steering column housing to be able to replace bearings, ford steering column, steering column repair

i have a 1997 f150 standard shift truck and the steering wheel has a lot of play and at times seems to catch, i've been told that the   bearings are probably bad in the housing. i have everything removed but the housing because i can't get the   housing free from the ignition switch linkage. any help on how to remove the housing from the linkage would be appreciated

Sorry about your column, although this is a very common problem with Ford cars and trucks.  I would agree, the bearing have blown up.

My company has recently uploaded web pages and a description of how to rebuild the upper portion of a Ford steering column (for a small fee).  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions with pictures. Although the example is for a 2000 Mustang, the column is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing)
