Steering Column Repair: 79 trans am, tilt steering, floor shift

Question
i bought a 79 trans am and the key wont turn to the lock position. i looked at the column and  it looks like theres no possible way to turn it to the lock position. its a tilt steering wheel and i dont no if its original or not. and i cant get the key out

Answer
Hi Daniel:

I'm guessing it's a floor shift (automatic).  If that's correct, then here is what you are missing.  There is a linkage rod that goes from the trans to the column and attaches just outside the firewall to a lever in the column.  If that rod is disconnected or mis-adjusted, it won't let the key come back.
Remove the rod if it's attached and then pull the lever inside the column where the rod attached --up. Then your key should come out.
that rod is supposed to be adjusted to push the lever up when you put it in Park.  It prevents the key from being taken out in error when the vehicle is in motion (in drive)

I hope this gets you out of it.  If not, give me more details about the car and the problem.

Good luck
Doug
