Steering Column Repair: ignition lock housing 2002 gmc sierra, steering wheel lock, gmc sierra

Question
2002 gmc sierra truck ext.cab tilt, lock sterring, shift on column. I broke the key off in the ignition while trying to start it.I had trouble turning the key 1-2 times in the past month. this time the key broke. Regretfully I damaged the housing with a screwdriver, which is the tool I'm using to start my truck now.I can sucessfully  start and drive it , but cannot turn the ignition completely off.I can turn it back enough to stop the engine, but the a\c,radio,and access. stay on. I have to remove the neg. cable to shut down . My ? is ; Will I have to remove the steering wheel and disengage the airbag to change the housing and ignition lock? I located a wrecked 1999 gmc or silverado truck with the parts I need . What year range can I use ? Is this a job I should leave to a certified mechanic? Hopefully I can do it myself, my funds are limited. Thank you very much for your time.

Answer
Hi Jesse:

Sorry about your truck. The short answer is yes, you will be getting in over your head (I think).  Here's why.  You do have to remove the airbag, steering wheel, lock plate and retainer clip, as well as he wiring to the housing an switch.  In addition, you have an antitheft system that is different fro the 1999, so I don;t think the parts will swap, even though they may look similar.  Once installed, the lock cylinder will need to be -to your original (for the antitheft system) and then you can reassemble the wiring, and airbag system.  Once installed, the vehicle may need to be reprogrammed for the new lock housing and antitheft system you just put in.

If you feel comfortable doing all this, then go ahead and give it a shot.  Otherwise, you may end up towing it anyway.

I don;t mean to scare you, but there are a lot of places this can go wrong.  I wish you luck either way
