Steering Column Repair: engine shuts down when shift lever is moved, buick roadmaster, tilt column

Question
I have a 1994 Buick Roadmaster.  Occasionally the engine will die when I move the shift lever from park into reverse, or from neutral to "OD".  If I'm careful to move the shift lever VERY slowly, the phenomenon is less likely to occur.  I don't believe the trans. even has a chance to be "in-gear".  It's not "bogging down" under load, but more like it's just being turned off.  More of an electrical problem than engine/trans. related.  I also just noticed that when this occurs the ignition lock/cylinder/key will rotate backwards slightly when I move the shift lever out of "park".  Could some mechanical defect be forcing the cylinder to move the actual ign. switch to "off"?  Thanks for any direction that you can provide.

Answer
Hello Ward:
Sorry about your car.
Most likely, the ignition rack gear / actuator is getting caught by the shift mechanism in the shift bowl.  If the column is not loose (the tilt wobbling around), then the actuator is probably partially broken and will most likely snap in the next few weeks.  If the column IS loose, then you can avoid any further damage by repairing the loose tilt now.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our company website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the loose tilt column you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.

I hope these videos help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply locate the part and you can purchase it directly through the shopping cart.  We stock just about everything you would need to repair your car properly.
Good luck
