Steering Column Repair: steering column, chevy silverado, shift indicator

Question
Hi,
I have a 1990 chevy silverado 1500 auto, and when i go from Park to Drive or another gear the orange needle doesn't move over the PRN OD D21 to tell me what gear its in. I took off the cover plate under the steering wheel and found a long metal wire dangling that is connected to a sleeve that snaps onto the shifter to tell you what gear your in. Is there a Diagram that tells me how to reconnect it

Answer
Hi Seth:
What you are referring to is the shift indicator string.  This is often part of the mechanism that includes the needle and PRNDL assembly in the dash cluster.  It cannot be reattached to the column once it breaks off the clip.  It is a measured length and simply clips onto the shift bowl at a designated spot.  You can move it slightly for adjusting, but once it breaks, you need a new string (or indicator assembly).
Some vehicles have the string sold separately, so you will have to check with Chevrolet for your specific model to find out how it is sold.

Good luck
Doug
