Steering Column Repair: replacing stering colum, ford steering column, steering gearbox

i have a 1991 ford pick up,i dont think its tilt stering.the former owner gave me a used stering colum to replace it.its extremly dificult to steer mainly right turns,left turns arent as bad.even the ignition system had to be rigged to start the truck.on the road the steering is very good,i dont know why its the turning thats hard to do.the way i have to start the truck is turn the lock cylinder to start then press a button they hooked up with a wire to the selinoid switch.i would be grateful for any information you could help me with.

Hi Gary:
Replacing the column will help you with the ignition problem, but I doubt it will do anything for the steering issue.  That is usually in the steering gearbox or the Power Steering system, not the column.

Although we don;t have instructions on how to replace the column, we have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the upper portion of that Ford steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. Although the example is for a 1991 Ford Truck, the column is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing)
