Steering Column Repair: Steering column repair/replacement 86 CJ7, steering column repair, jeep wrangler

Question
I have an 86 jeep wrangler, and my steering column clearly needs to be repaired or replaced. My question is since this part for this year has been discontinued, are there any other older vehicle out there that have the same steering column that i could salvage. If not, when i lift the hood of my jeep and grab the steering column it moves about an inch and a half from side to side. do i just need to replcae the shaft inside the steering column to fix this problem.
Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Joseph:
You have not fully explained what it is that you need or what is wrong with your column, but I suspect the lower bearing and retainer is what you are talking about and cannot find.
You can replace your column with a used column if you can find one or you can rebuild it with new parts if you know the part numbers and can get the part.

For used parts...Try this site.  You may be able to find what you need.

It's the website all the salvage yards use when they say "Hang on--let me see if my other yard has it".  Actually it's an online database of all the salvage yards in America.  You can search by part, location or price

For new parts, let me know what you need as my company may have it.

Or...once you have the original part numbers, try this site.

It's the graveyard for all NOS (New Old Stock) from dealers who couldn't sell their parts or had obsolete numbers they couldn't return. You may have to set up an account first.

Good Luck
