Steering Column Repair: Replacement of lock shoe pin or pivot pin, pivot pin, chevrolet truck

Question
1988 K5 Blazer with tilt steering. What is the easiest way to change the Lock Shoe pin and Pivot pin? The column is tight but there is play in the tilt mechanism. After checking out the explosion view, we have decided that the problem is one or all of these pins and want to replace them ourselves. This problem appeared all of a sudden and not gradually. We are used to making all our own repairs but have not gotten into the steering column as yet.  I do have an original Light Duty Truck Service Manual I got when we purchased the truck new.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Max:

Most often, the looseness in the column is in the mount below the tilt mechanism.  From time to time (especially the older K5 series) the steel tube that the mount is secured to begins to tear.  You won't be able to see the tear until you disassemble the column.  If it is torn, it can be mig welded back to full strength.  If it's not torn, then the rest of this will solve your problem.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.
