Steering Column Repair: tilt steering column removeal and replacement, clockspring, tilt steering

Question
i have a 1992 grand am with a tilt steering wheel the tilt dose not work and the turn signal will not work so i would like your help in removing and replacing the hold steering column. thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Darrell:
This car has an airbag which will make this a little harder than otherwise.  You need to set the wheels in the straight ahead position.
Disconnect the battery
Remove the lower panel under the column
Remove the steering column covers
Disconnect all the wires you see attaching to the column and switches.
Unbolt the steering shaft near the floor
Unbolt the 4 bolts securing the column to the vehicle.
Pull the column out

You can only use a column from a 1992 or 1993 Grand Am to replace it and they both have to have the same options.

to reassemble, reverse the procedures.
If the airbag light is on when you are finished then the column you just installed has a bad clockspring and you will have to replace that, either from the original column or new ($125)

This part cannot be rotated unless installed in the vehicle.

Good luck
Doug
