Steering Column Repair: Steering Column Replacement, chevy silverado, 2003 chevy silverado

My husband bought a 2003 Chevy Silverado Single cab 4x4 a few months back from a dealership. And the air bag on the Steering Column is busted. I guess the last owner needed to change the blinker switch and didn't unhook the battery before he did it. My question is. Does he need a new Steering Column like the whole thing. And how much would this cost to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You :)

What do you mean the airbag is 'busted'?  Has the airbag deployed & is not hanging out over the steering wheel, or is it still intact but the airbag light remains illuminated?
Very different answers depending on what you tell me.
