Steering Column Repair: 1972 Monte Carlo Column Auto w/ Tilt, chevrolet truck, key cylinder

Question
My key will not turn all the way. Always worked fine with no hint of trouble. Then one day, no worky. Turns about 1/4 of the way forward then stops. Jiggled key and shifter with no results. Removed column from car. Removed wheel, turn signal lever and all screws visible. Removed key cylinder. Removed main ignition switch on top of column. Still won't turn. It feels as if the problem is in the rod that operates the lower switch. I can't see how the cover comes on off the column. Pulls up about 1/4 of an inch and stops. Nothing visible holding it. This is where I'm stuck. Thank You!

Answer

preload spring
Hi David:

I believe the problem you are facing is the preload spring has broken and is jamming the rack gears so the rod will not move as far as it should.
This spring is actually a wire that move the pin that locks the steering wheel.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the video is for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.  Pay special attention to the part after the lock housing cover comes off and you can see the tilt housing.  That's where the preload spring is.
