Steering Column Repair: switch on 1998 1 ton 3500, multifunction switch, release pin

Question
Sir, we are trying to change out the lock on a 1998 Chevrolet 1 ton 3500.  First, can we use a lock for a 1995 Chevrolet 1 ton??
If so, the directions say to loosen and put a 1/16 wrench in hole to unlock.  We can't find the hole!!

Answer

GM access hole
Hi Ginger:

I am enclosing a picture of where the hole is for your vehicle.  Yes, you should be able to swap locks, I don;t believe either one has a Pass-lock antitheft systems so they should be interchangeable.

If you take the steering wheel and airbag off, it's much easier to access the hole you are trying to reach, but it can be done without removing those as well.  The one thing you need to be careful of is the red 4-way flasher button on the top of the column.  If you are not taking the airbag and steering wheel off, you run a high risk of breaking that switch.  If you do, it's about $225 to buy another one; it's part of the multifunction switch and those are not interchangeable.

Remember, after you find the hole, the lock has to be in the 'crank' position in order for you to depress the release pin on the lock cylinder.  Make sure you disconnect the battery otherwise you will damage the vehicle will try to start and you may starter while you are trying to get the lock out.

Good luck
Doug
