Question
I JUST RECENTLY BOUGHT A 1977 K-5 CHEVY BLAZER (2-W)JUST OUT OF THE BLUE THE IGNITION WENT OUT THE KEY TURNS VERY LOOSE AND NOTHING HAPPENS, IT DOES NOT MAKE A NOISE NOTHING WHAT DO I HAVE TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN ?

Answer

rack gear
Hi Robert:

It sounds like the rack gear is broken. This is a fairly common problem in GM tilt columns.  I am enclosing a picture of the part so you can see what you are after. Most of the time, the semicircle part breaks disconnecting the lock cylinder which still rotates and the actuator rod leading tho the ignition switch mounted on the tube.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the video is for a Chevrolet truck with an automatic trans, the column is almost identical to yours.
