Go to your local parts store and see if they rent steering wheel pullers. If you can obtain one, remove the horn pad. Remove the steering wheel nut and then install the puller and remove the wheel.ok now how do i remove the column from my truck?i am going to replace it with a new column.

Answer
First off, I doubt if you are installing a new column. You are probabbly putting in a junkyard column that will be just as bad if not worse. You did not explain what the problem is with your steering column. Is it loose? Is it a tilt? Are the shifter forks not operating properly?
There are two ways to remove the steering column. Make sure the battery is disconnected and that the wheels are blocked to prevent rolling. The easiest would be to disconnect at the steering box under the hood. You can either remove the two nuts at the Rag joint or there should be a pinch clamp with a bolt going through it. There are splines at this clamp. You will find a broach fo clearance of the bolt. The shaft will fit in the splines only one way. Disconnect the steering shaft under the hood. Disconnect trans linkage by removing the retaining clips. You may find wave washers there. Don't lose these. They keep tention on the mounting for the linkage.
Its been a very long time since I have seen the dash in one of these trucks. Remove the panel under the steering column.
Disconnect the wiring leading to the column under the dash. Remove the attaching bolts for the column under the dash at the firewall. (Should be 4 or 5). Look upward from under the dash and you will see two mounting studs right by the dash. Remove them. The steering column should drop down and pull it towards the seat. Reverse the procedure for the install. Make sure you find the tourque specs for the steering shaft bolts and tighten accordingly.

Good luck!
