Subaru Repair: 1996 sub outback 2.2 --5 speed awd, posi trac, viscous coupling

Question
THIS CAR DOES FINE IN TOWN BUT IF YOU RUN IT ON THE HWY, AT 60MPH FOR SAY ABOUT 15 MIN. AND GO TO PULL INTO A PARKING LOT IT ACTS LIKE A 4-WD TRUCK WITH THE HUBS LOCKED ON ASPHALT WITH THE FRONT SEEMINGLY BINDING WHEN YOU TURN VERY MUCH AT ALL, IF YOU GO STRAIGHT IT DONT DO IT AT ALL. I JUST HAD GEAR OIL CHANGED BUT IT DIDNT HELP, WOULD SOME POSI-TRAC ADDITIVE HELP THIS PROBLEM OR WHAT? THANKS KEVIN

Answer
You may have a tire problem. If all 4 tires are not the same size, brand, and tread pattern, and if any one tire has more than 1/4 inch difference in overall circumference, you need new tires. This is the single biggest reason for your kind of problem. But, if the tires are right, I hate to say this, but you probably have a problem in the transfer case section of your transmission. I belive that year it has a viscous coupling that helps the power transfer from the front to the rear and that is not a serviceable part. Around here, it is usually cheaper to find a good used transmission than to fix the one you got. Sorry!
