Answer
The better idea if you want to build a wrecker is starting with at least a one truck cab chassis. Then again depending on what you decide to tow a one ton truck may be too small. The half ton frames are too weak, brakes are inadequate and axles will not last. For the sake of others and yourself, don't do a half ton or a 3/4 ton, you will thank me later! I mention a cab chassis because a pickup truck frame is dimensional different in regards to cab axle length and frame width. All wrecker bodies are designed for cab chassis frames. Some have put wrecker bodies on non cab chassis frames but modifications are necessary. Wrecker bodies can be found on ebay but unless you are strictly pulling junk you will need at least a wheel lift. Old school slings and tow bar chaining still have uses but most cars on the road today will get damaged. You may also want to review your state laws because there could be truck requirements regarding towing. Good luck!
