Towing Issues: Tow comp. wanting money and title, towing company, repo

Question
My son was in an accident and the towing company that towed his car want money and the title to his car. I have never heard of paying a towing company for removing my totaled vehicle, if anything I have sent them the title to the vehicle. Can they charge him for the tow and a daily fee until its paid?

Answer
Wendy,

The only reason I have ever accepted a title to a totaled vehicle without also charging a tow bill is because the car was worth something. But why would I do that if I didn't have to?

Just like a repo where the bank sells your car and you still owe the rest of the loan amount, the towing company will sell the car and you owe the rest of the tow bill, which could add up to several thousand in fees. I suggest you make a deal with them. Maybe offering to pay the initial tow bill without storage.
