Towing Issues: towing a Toyota 4runner backward, steering wheel lock, toyota 4runner

Question
QUESTION: Is it OK to tow a toyota 4runner backward, and putting the car in park is good enough for locking the front wheels

Thanks
Nicky

ANSWER: You didn't state what year or if it's 4wd or 2wd. There are some 2wd 4runners out there. All 4wd 4runners 1995 and newer can't or NOT recommended by Toyota. Most 1984-1994 4wd can with transmission and transfer case both in neutral but VERY limited in speed and distance, which is still not a good idea. All 2wd 4runners can be wheel lifted or dollied backwards, rear tires off the ground. The steering wheel must be secured for safety. Don't rely on the steering wheel lock in the column!

Answer
If you are not familiar with lasso the seatbelt through the bottom center of the steering wheel and buckling the seat belt trick I suggest attaching one inch tie downs on each side of the steering wheel and fasten under the seat frame. If you have steering wheel controls make sure the straps doesn't rub or put much pressure of them. Those buttons can or might get damaged. Another method is a tie down secured at the bottom center of the steering wheel and tied to the bottom of the seat frame. Make sure you don't grab the seat cushion, wire mesh or seat covering wrapped under the seat. Also, don't pinch or snag any wiring under the seat. You don't what any play in the steering wheel and make darn sure your hook ups don't slide or come loose. If your not comfortable with this type of hook up go to awdirect.com website, here is a link for a steering wheel lock http://www.awdirect.com/default2.asp?keyword=steering+wheel .  Looking at the design you can get an idea of how it's done. Any other questions, just ask.
