Towing Issues: Towed from own apt complex, tow truck drivers, best excuse

Question
I'm in Lexington Kentucky.  I just moved into my apartment complex and had a different vehicle than the one i had my sticker on.  Sure enough a few hours later they had me hooked up.  I caught the tow guy in the process and he of course offered for 50 bucks to take it off.  I tried to pay him with a check for proof of payment but knew that wouldn't fly.  I tried to convince him i didn't have any cash but he kept insisting it would be 125 then.  So i finally forked out 50 bucks knowing the company would never see any of it.  My question is, how should I have gone about this situation?  Should I have refused to pay cash and went to the company and pleaded my case?  I tried to call the landlord, but it was around 10pm and I got the voicemail.  Thanks for any help

Answer
What makes you think that the tow company would not see the money for the "drop fee" ?

That is an industry standard practice to release vehicles at the location before they are towed away for a lower than normal price, which is generally 1/2 of the towing fee...

Did you get a receipt for the money you paid ?

If not then you are just as much at fault for not doing things legal.

The public perception of tow truck drivers is one where you all think we are redneck crooks who just look for cars to steal - tow away...

When in reality, we are called in by management 90% of the time to remove vehicles which are illegally parked...(you stated you parked a different vehicle than is registered or has a sticker, so you did break the law)

As to taking a check, come on get real...  You know that you can stop payment on a check real easy and then they tow company would have to go to court and sue you for the money..

Pleading the case for parking illegally, well I wish you luck if you think you would get anywhere on that one, as the tow company has most likely heard every story and excuse possible.
(best excuse I heard was when I was towing in Oregon, where "my sick grandmothers poodle ate the parking tag when I was in New York", and the car had Texas tags)
