Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 2001 continental check trans message, longevity, transmissions

Question
I have a 2001 continental and the service engine light is on with a message on the computer to check transmission.  Have taken it in, first they flushed system..didn't work, second they changed a sensor..didn't work
Now he wants to replace the transmission with a replacement from a used car approx $2000. but have heard from others may/maynot need replaced. any suggestions?

Answer
HI Gregg,

I agree that it may not need to be replaced. It doesn't sound like they know much about what they are doing. Any transmission guy will know that flushing a transmission will do more harm than good, especially when the transmission is already experiencing problems. And used for $2K? Sheeesh, I would rebuilt it for less then that. Although the Continental has had a history of less then steller transmission longevity, it is one of the top transmissions we repair. Do you have the codes that kicked the light on? I need the number of the code or codes. This will help me figure out what is happening with your car. Please resubmit with the codes and your city and I'll help find someone that will not rip you off.
