Towing Issues: I think am being told BS, dmv website, personal belongings

Question
Hey Richard, I do live in CA but can not find the answer to this question on the DMV website. I live in Ontario, CA and my car was towed for expired registration. I then found out two or three days later because I did not realized right away that it had been towed from in front of the apartment complex on a main street. I then asked how much the car was to get out of impound, they told me more than I had at the time so I got a release from the police department to get my personal belongings. After that I realized that I was not going to be able to get the money for the car because the total was increasing to fast & I was not going to be able to come up with it. I did not give them the title & understand that they are allowed to send it to collections (which it currently is and am paying $50 dollars a month to freeze the interest rate for now) but I was wondering 1st can they add interest to this if I don't pay, if so what is the rate. 2nd if they can add interest what is the limit of the total amount because when I asked them they said there is no limit. Lastly when I asked them to see a record / paper or something that states how much the car has been sold for they told me that they did not have anything like that & if so they could not show me. I asked what do you mean you don't have that, they just told me the same thing over & over. I know they can charge me for the tow & the storage but how do I minus that from what they are trying to charge me if I don't know what they sold it for? How can I make them show me what I am entitled to see (with out going to jail for slugging someone)? The yard is only exactly 1.3 miles away from where it was towed from & the original bill was 1,560.82 and since paying on it it is now 1,360.82 . I think I am being screwed & would really appreciate any info you could give me. Thank you for your time and knowledge on the situation it is greatly appreciated!

Answer
Well as to the interest rates and such, I would not know where to find that information at all.. Maybe the State has a law on interest rates which is controlled by the department of revenue or its equal..

As to the records of what the vehicle sold for, I would think it could be got but it might be a hassle to do it...

Remember one thing, they are usually quoting or following laws and such and those same laws can help you in getting the information...
I am not sure if this falls under the truth in lending or consumer protection laws but it is worth checking out...

I also want to point out that the total tow fee you mentioned is most likely a tow fee of maybe 200.00 and the rest would be a daily storage fee which increased each day  it was in the impound  yard...
