Towing Issues: Flat Towing Jeep Wrangler X, jeep wrangler, flat tow

Question
I will be moving cross country and am planning to "flat tow" our Jeep 2004 Wrangler X (5 speed) behind our Jeep 2006 Commander Limited. My question is concerning gear placement. I've read both sides to leave everything in neutral and placing the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in 5th gear. What is right? Further in reading your site do I need a braking system on the Wrangler? If so what do I search on or is that something that a professional has to do?

Cheers!
Ed

Answer
Ed,

Firstly, I do not recommend towing a Wrangler with a Commander.  The Commander doesn't weigh enough to effectively keep the Wrangler under control.

That said, I put the transfer case in Neutral and the transmission in a high gear so that it's idiot proof.  If the transfer case isn't in neutral, the truck won't tow.

In most states you would need a braking system (see http://www.roadmaster-tow-bars.com/laws.php).

In some states there are laws that would make this combination illegal (max. braking distance for example).

It's ultimately up to you but I would really look at what this trip is going to cost you in equipment, gas, wear, time...  and get a quote or two to have the truck shipped across.

Good luck,
