Toyota Repair: Strut replacement, strut bolts, labor time

Question
Hi, I recently purchased a 1991 tercel from a private party. I was told that the front right strut needs to be replaced. Is it possible to replace myself and if so what tools would i need and where could i purchase them? Also how much should I pay a mechanic for labor if need be?

Answer
The strut can be removed completely, you will need a socket that fits on the lower strut bolts and alarge breaker bar to break them loose, A 14mm socket to get the upper mout loose under the hood, if you buy a complete assembly with the spring it's simply a matter of exchanging it with the new one, a mechanic will usually charge one hour labor time, the strut can also be bought by itself without the spring but then it takes a special spring compressor to disassemble it, labor time then becomes about three hours, I highly recommend that you purchase the complet assembly.
