Toyota Repair: Repair costs, timing belt replacement, engines transmissions

Question
Hi Ted. Thanks for volunteering. My wife and I own a 2001 4Runner with 92,000 miles. We drive about 12,000 miles a year with it. We'd like to hang on to it for another two years but not if we have to pump too much money into it.  Do you think the engine and transmission will last until we hit 120,000 miles? Are there any other big repair jobs that we should expect?

Thanks,
Paul

Answer
It will easily make to that mileage if properly maintained, if it's a V-6 the major expenses would be timing belt replacement at 90,000 miles and possibly the water pump, these engines/transmissions can last well into the 200,000 mile range and beyond, the key is to keep it maintained, keep the engine oil and the transmission fluid as well as the coolant clean with regular maintenance.
