Land Rover Repair: discovery II engine knock, piston slap, wrist pins

Question
we have a 2002 discovery II that has, for the most part, been a
great vehicle.  it has an internal engine noise (knock) during
acceleration no matter the speed.  my rover dealer in
minneapolis has seen the truck twice and i have asked them to
check it out.  they say it is the way it should be and not to worry.
my other mechanic said it sounds like a "sticky lifter" to him and
repair is big
$$.  what do you know about this issue and what, in your
opinion is  the problem.

thanks much,

mike

Answer
The steel caps that's pressed into the end of the rocker arm becomes loose in these engines and it causes a rap like you describe.  The cur eis new rocker shafts, which is probably 6 hours work and $500 parts.

Lifters themselves are seldom a source of trouble.

But there are other sources of noise, too - wrist pins, piston slap, catalysts, etc.

I suggest getting a good second opinion
