Tractor Repair: International 474 power steering, cotter pin, intermittent problems

Question
I was having some intermittent problems with the power steering on my tractor but nothing that I could identify has being a recurring situation other than it seemed to be worse on cold days. Well, it was -5F the other morning and the steering was extremely stiff (all the other hydraulic systems working fine) and I forced the steering wheel and broke off the power steering bracket welds, or what was left of the welds. Out of the 3" of welds, 2 1/2" were corroded so I would say that they had been broken for a while and the whole assembly must have been out of whack, causing the hard steering. The problem, I was able to remove the power steering cylinder easily enough but I can't see how to remove the fixed end that is attached to the front axle. It appears to me that the power steering shaft broke off at that point of attachment. Any ideas how to remove that bracket? Is there part of the shaft still inside?
Thanks for your help.

Answer
From your description, it sounds like the shaft of the steering cylinder broke off inside the clevis.  This is not uncommon.  The end of the shaft screws into the clevis, and the clevis is attached to the front axle with a headed pin and cotter pin.  To see a breakdown of the parts, go to caseih.com and select parts, then select search for parts.  Enter your model in the search box and select search.  Select your model from the results, and look at the steering and front axle sections.
