Tractor Repair: 8n smells like coolant when started, head gasket, head bolts

Question
Hello - thanks for taking the time to look at my question.  I've got a Ford 8n that we replaced the head gasket on recently.  It ran fine for about 10 hours or so, but I am now getting a very strong sweet smell when the tractor starts. I haven't let it run long, but it seemed to start and run fine when I've had to move it across the garage.  Can you help me identify the problem? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hello,

I would suggest that you retorque the head first and see if that helps.  Usually after an engine has been run up to operating temperature a few times, the head gasket will compress slightly and the head will need to be retorqued.  If it does not help, then possibly the head is warped slightly and needs to be resurfaced or replaced.  It can be checked with a straight edge.  Make sure the head and block surfaces are absolutely clean and have no carbon, dirt, or old gasket residue on them.  Make sure the threads on the head bolts or studs are in good condition and are clean and slightly lubricated, and that that there is enough thread so that they do not bottom out before they put enough clamping force on the head.
