Tractor Repair: JD 2350 problems going into reverse, linkage problem, bellcrank

Question
I borrowed my neighbor's tractor which has a long list of issues, but one big one is an issue with going into reverse.  I used it to unload a truck of large bales, and just before I was done thought I had lost reverse entirely.  You have to hold the lever all the way at the bottom of the slot, and can feel the gears bumping together until they finally mesh, IF they mesh.  There doesn't seem to be any more lever travel when it finally goes in.  I thought it might be an obvious linkage problem, so I had my son wiggle the lever while I watched it.  The lever on the F-R shuttle is moving in a good sweep, no sign of weakness.  The slot the lever moves in is lined up with the other slot for normal and high range, so I'm assuming no adjustment needed there.  I see that the linkage going into the box is a kind of sleeve over the other shaft.  Is this a common weak point, and is there any kind of fastener holding the bellcrank to it that could be loose?  Can I take up slack in a linkage rod and keep everything lined up in the console?  Any other advice?

Thanks,
Steve.

Answer
I need to know if the lever to move the tractor to fwd/rev is it own lever or part of the gear shift. If it a reverser handle then you the problem might problem in your shift valve but I think it is inside the transmission. Either way I think the problem is inside its just how much the repair is going to cost. The answer is a lot.
