Tractor Repair: diesel engine missing, injector lines, valve adjustments

Question
Hi, I own a 1966 international B414 diesel. I noticed a slight miss under power last winter. The tractor idles fine but the miss is getting worse at higher speed. I replaced the fuel filter but it did not help. thanks, Frank

Answer
Hello,

You can determine which cylinder has the miss by loosening the injector lines one at a time, listening to the engine, and then tightening them back up.  When you get to the one that does not change the sound of the engine, that is the one that has the miss.  It could be a bad injector, low compression, or the injection pump.  The injectors can be tested on a pop tester machine.  The compression can be checked with a compression tester and the proper adapter to fit the engine.  If compression is low on the missing cylinder, check the valve adjustments first and adjust if necessary.  If that does not help, the engine will need internal repairs.  If everything else checks out good, then the injection pump should be sent in to a diesel injection shop to be checked and repaired if necessary.
