Triumph Repair: oil coming through the dip-stick, pollution control equipment, pressure relief valve

Question
Hi David,

I'm just beginning to learn about my 1975 TR6. I bought the car in the fall, and it had been in storage for 15 years. To get the car running, the guy I bought it from disconnected a number of hoses, and bypassed the pollution control equipment (not sure if that has a bearing on the issue, but I thought I'd mention it anyways).

When the car is running for 5 minutes, oil starts to spew out of the dipstick. Is this a common problem? What could cause this, and what should I do to fix it?

Thank you,

-Cam

Answer
Hi Cam, I personally wouldn't start an engine that was sitting up that long I would have taken it apart and cleaned it but that,s no criticism at you. it's not a common problem. at the least there is a little gasket on the dipstick that sort of seals the tube. see if it is ok. make sure the correct amount of oil in in it also check the oil pressure is is high? after all that time the oil pressure relief valve might be stuck causing too high pressure. you might get some motor flush from the parts store and run it thru following the directions and then change the oil again.the pollution stuff isn't playing into this. let me know some of these answers and we will go a little further.
