Volkswagen Repair: 2000 vw jetta tdi, vw jetta, torque converter

Question
Hi the A/T won't shift from 2 to 3 gear skips to 4, the check engine light came on had it scanned and codes PO740 and 730 popped up. I was told by a technician that the torque converter is shot and I need to rebuild the  transmission, is there a way to diagnose these codes for this car to make sure is not an electrical/computer issue? before getting jacked up? many thanks.

 These are the correct codes for a torque converter problem.   If you have a reason not to trust them, you can have the shop actually show you the display as they are scanning it, then look up the codes yourself at:
http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/
This will give you all the non-specific model codes, 0000-0999.
If you get VW specific error codes in the 1000 series, just click on the VW icon at the top of the web page to look those up.
