Volkswagen Repair: 2000 2.0 Jetta Engine Mounts, torque specifications, air hammer

Question
Hi, We have a 2000 2.0l Jetta and had to replace the timing belt, tbelt tensioner and water pump and when it came time to put the passenger side engine mounts back together we could not figure out which part meant which. We know what goes where but our Chilton's book gives torque specifications for the Mount to Body, Mount to Engine and Mount to Bracket and we are not sure which one is which. We figured that the Mount to Bracket were the bolts connecting the two mounts but they were extremely hard to remove and had a really low torque rating. If you could help us clarify which bolts are which it would be a tremendous help, thank you.

Answer
Hi Tony;
It sounds to me like this mount has been taken apart before, and the bolts were cross threaded.  I would replace the mount, and get new bolts.  They don't have to be extra tight, just tight.  What was the spec.?  About 20 to 25 lb-ft?  Sounds about right.  It really doesn't take an air ratchet set to the highest torque setting available to get the bolts tight enough to hold the engine, but I see it everyday.  I use a 3/8" drive tool, and a couple of guys use a 1/2 drive air hammer.  Some people's kids!  I would suggest replacing the mount that you have.  especially the lower portion.  The parts are avilable seperately.  Good luck, Tony.  Hope this helps.
