Volkswagen Repair: engine mounting bolts breaking, newton meters, torque wrench

Question
I've replaced my TB, but tried torquing the engine mount bolts to the block per the Hayne's manual torque spec of 44 ft-lbs, and twisted a bolt.  In fact, I bought another set of new bolts, and it happened again.  At first I thought it was the torque wrench, but then I used three different ones to verify the torquing.  It wouldn't get passed about 37.5 ft-lbs.  What am I doing wrong?

Answer
Hi Damian;
Are you sure the manual meant pound feet, and not newton meters.....44 Nm is about 36 lb-ft.....It might be just a misprint.  Check out the "Bentley's" manual for your car at the library, and see what it says.  Good luck, Damian.  I hope this helps.
