Volvo Repair: Smoking engine., volvo books, flame trap

Question
Just bought an '88 740 volvo sedan and everytime i drive it the engine is coated in oil and it smokes because the engine heats the oil. I had one of my mechanically inclined friends take a look at it and he thinks that their is no PCV valve to release pressure so oil is getting out wherever it can (we determined its coming from under the oil cap). I bought a new oil cap and it hasnt gotten any better (its making a good seal, etc.). Is it possible that the old oil cap had some sort of valve in it to let pressure out? If so, is their a place online i can order the same type of cap from?

Answer
Josh, Your friend needs to read more Volvo books.  Its called a flame trap filter and its probably clogged up.  Its under the intake manifold and it sits on top of the black flame trap box. Take it out and replace it.  Drill out the holder nipple with a small drill bit.  Follow the smaler vacuum line and there will be a fitting on the Intake manifold.  Remove that with an 11mm wrench and clean that nipple also.  All the seals are probably pushed out by now so maybe find a Volvo shop and have the engine Resealed.  Roger
