Volvo Repair: Gas Flow & Overheating Problems, volvo 740 gle, fuel pressure regulator

Question
I have a 1987 Volvo 740 GLE and when I start it up I have to wait for the temperature gauge to hit the half-way point or else my car will go about 2 blocks before it goes 30 mph. After the temp gauge hits the half-way point it only takes about half a block to get to 30 mph.It will stall if I try to drive it like a normal car and give it gas but if I step gradually on the gas and allow the speed to pick up slowly then it won't stall. Also once I cut the car off I have to damn near flood it to get it to start back. What can it be that's causing me these problems?Oh yeah the spark plugs and the fuel filter were changed and it still runs the same.

Answer
Patrick, sounds like its overfueling.  It can be a number of things but it sounds like the fuel pressure regulator.  There can also be a problem with the Air mass meter and the fuel pump check valve.  Tests need to be perform to see what is going on.  Roger
