BMW: 1995 bmw 318i shifting problem, 1995 bmw 318i, automatic transmissions

I recently purchased a 318i (automatic). Seems to be having problems shifting between 1st through third gears (intermittently). Will not make fluid change in to next gear, but will fluctuate RPM gauge and not make the switch. I usually have to let go of gas for while and resume. This usually solves the problem but I can't seem to pinpoint the cause of this issue? Any ideas, maybe change kind of gas i'm putting in the car?

 Fuel will make no change in the shifting of the transmission, so dont waste time and money on that.  I have little experience with the automatic transmissions, but it sounds like it's worn, or the kickdown linkage is out of adjustment.

 I would take it to a transmission shop and have them look at it.
