BMW: 88 ix fuel regulator and injectors, bentley repair manual, center vent

Question
Hi,
I'm upgrading to 19# fuel injectors and adj. fuel regulator.
I have the Bentley repair manual; the instructions seem clear but the book seems to be written for seasoned mechanics and not first time DIYers.
I was wondering if there is anything else I should know before tackling this procedure?
Is there anything special about pulling the injectors out? Do I put Vaseline on the o rings? Any little tricks I should know about?
I'm not a wrench; my extent on working on cars is changing oil, installing stereo equipment and easy thinks like that.
thanks for your help.

In regards to my first question about the center vents, you said you had already answered the question. can you tell me were i can find your answer.

Thanks George

Answer
George,
Sorry about the first question.  It seems that Allexperts.com has issues posting replies sometimes.  I DID type a reply about it, but it apparenlty never went through.

About the center vent, I think it just "pops" out, especially since you've removed all the fasteners.  It's been a long time since I've removed one, so I dont remember correctly.  Unfortunately all of my sources dont show anything either.

The 19# injector is a popular mod, and it's not very hard to do.  The injectors (depending on brand) might be slightly taller/shorter than stock, however this is unlikely.  You "might" have to remove the intake manifold to remove them all, I know it's a pain to get to.  The original injectors will likely be hard to remove.  The car is almost 20 years old, so those injectors are likely sealed in there pretty good.

When you remove the fuel rail, the injectors might come with it, but it probably wont be that easy.

Yes, Vasaline would work fine, just make sure you coat them well and make sure they slide in without having to force it.  Take your time with this, because if one of those o-rings gets cut it will spray fuel all over the engine, causeing a fire (I've seen this happen first hand).

Good luck with the mods, sounds like fun

P.S. George, it sounds like you've done your homework, as the 19# injectors are just about perfect for these cars.  I would urge you to check out www.bmwe30tech.net if you haven't already.  These guys are devoted to modifying the e30 and have TONS of information for you to learn.

 Good luck!
