Question
hi again  i had a look at the rear shock mounts on both sides the look fine but have been told about a bush on one of the suspention arms  can u help

Answer
Gary,

Its unfortunate that the rear shock mounts weren't your problem, as that would have been an easy fix.  There are only a few bushings (bushes) that are on the rear suspension.  The trailing arm that the wheel is mounted to, and connects to the body of the car has some large bushings in it as well.  These are a pain in the neck to remove.  personally on all of my 6 BMW's they were fine, and I never had to replace any of them.  Dont think this is your problem, or at least I hope it's not.  The next thing you need to do is, find where any movement is coming from.  In order to make a "clicking" or "rattling" noise, something has to be loose and able to move around.  So I would raise the rear of the car and support the car with jack stands (for safety).  Then, grab each rear wheel and shake, pull and wiggle in all directions to try and find which busing has failed.  Even a small ammount of movement in any direction could be your noise.  Make sure your sway bar end links are not broken/worn as well.  I know the mounts that hold the swaybar up are prone to breaking loose and possibly could be banging against the body of the car.  I can help a little, but you are the one who has to look for it, so next time you drive, have someone ride in the back seat and listen for which side of the car the sound is coming from, that will help reduce the ammount of time needed to search.  Maybe they can even pinpoint where the noise is coming from as well.  If you know someone with a bumby gravel driveway you can have them walk beside the car as you roll and see if they hear where its coming from.
I just thought of this, but I've heard of brake pads loosing their mounting tabs, which allows them to rattle around in the caliper causeing a noise.  Check your break pads too.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask again!
