BMW: BMW 520i, bmw 520i, nigeria africa

I have a 1991 BMW 520i.I imported it from europe but now I live in Nigeria, Africa. I realise that the car heats up in traffic and when it gets really hot, and I turn it off, it waits till it cools down before starting again.

Please what is the problem and how could it be rectified.

Is the needle on the water temperature increasing?
If so you possibly have a bad thermostat, waterpump or air in your cooling system.

Do you loose coolant? (possible leak) I need more information about how u can tell that your car is overheating to furthur diagnose your problem. Let me know.
