Buick/Olds: adjust the idle, gm vehicles, torque converter

Question
How do i adjust the idle on a 1988 Buick century custom 2.8 ltr. engine?  Im looking for a quick fix. I also would like to know what the problem is or could be.  When i come to a stop the car's idle goes up and down and sometimes the engine just shuts off.  it rarely shuts off but it does and i get know errors or engine light warnings.  I hope i can just make the idle higher and this will fix the problem.  I am short on money at the time. Thanks a lot. -Elliot

Sorry to tell you that you can't adjust the idle on a fuel injected car. But your problem sounds relatively easy to fix. To me, it sounds like one of 2 things.
1. Your torque converter is acting up and you may need a new one, but they are quite inexpensive. You can have someone unplug the torque converter for now if you like and your engine will run fine but it may be a bit harder on fuel.
2. Your throttle body may need to be cleaned. This is a common but very cheap problem on GM vehicles. Any garage or even somebody who knows what they are doing can clean it for you.
