Dodge: transmission, torque converter clutch, clutch discs

Question
QUESTION: ok bare with me here i have a 97 dodge dakota 4x4 with a v-8 and a 44re trans i was pulling my boat 1 day and trans started slipping so i took it out and tore it down and found a broken front band and clutch discs worn down.so i bout a kit for it and a shift kit followed the instructions put trans back in and wont shift into over drive and wont shift right sometimes it starts out in second gear and have to manuly put it in first. i get check engine light and these codes/////po740//po132//p1757// i just dont understand why i am having problems now and never before??? please help tim thanks Gordon

ANSWER: HEY GORDON,THE ONLY CODE THAT SCARES ME IS THE P0740.THIS CODE TELLS ME THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH,WHEN COMMANDED ON DID NOT APPLY. WHAT TYPE OF SHIFT KIT DID YOU USE? MOST OF THE TIME THESE KITS MODIFY THE TCC SYSTEM IN SOME WAY SHAPE OR FORM.THE P0132 IS A OXYGEN SENSOR AND LOOK FOR IT TO BE UNPLUGGED OR DAMAGED. IF YOU HAD TO REMOVE IT TO GET THE TRANS OUT THAT MAY HAVE DID IT IN. YOU COULD HAVE BUMPED IT WHILE REMOVING THE TRANS AND DAMAGED IT THAT WAY.SOMETIMES JUST UNPLUGGING IT AND PLUGGING IT BACK IN DOES THE TRICK. P1757 IS A GOVERNOR PRESSURE PROBLEM. THERE IS A SINGLE SENSOR AND A SOLENOID ON YOUR VALVE BODY,YOU NEED TO REPLACE THOSE TWO. THERE IS SHIFT SOLENOIDS THERE THAT CONTROL THE OD AND LOCK UP AND WITH NO OD AND THE COMPUTER TELLING US THE TCC IS NOT WORKING(P0740) YOU MAY HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THEM AS WELL. THE GOVERNOR PRESSURE CAN CAUSE ALL OF THIS AS WELL AS YOUR TAKE OFF IN SECOND GEAR. I WOULD REPLACE GOV SENSOR AND SOLENOID AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. IF YOU TOOK THESE OFF AND CLEANED THEM WHEN YOU INSTALLED THE SHIFT KIT,SOMETIMES THAT'S ALL IT TAKES. THESE TWO GO BAD ALL THE TIME SO I WONT BE SURPRISED IF ITS YOUR PROBLEM. WELL GORDON,I HOPE THIS HELPS. IF YOU NEED ME FOR MORE I AM ALWAYS HERE.THANKS FOR LISTENING,TIM.P.S. HEY GORDON,AS I WAS SITTING HERE DRINKING MY CUP OF COFFEE I JUST REMEMBERED A TRUCK THAT I FIXED THAT HAD P1757 FOR THE GOV PRESSURE AND IT HAD A SHORTED OXYGEN SENSOR. CHECK THESE FIRST AND VERIFY THAT YOU GET RID OF THE P0132 FIRST. WHEN THESE TWO CODES ARE PRESENT YOU HAVE TO FIX THE OXYGEN SENSOR FIRST.LET ME KNOW,TIM.

QUESTION: hey Tim thanks for replying back so quick. i must say you do have allot of knowledge of the transmission lol. whats got me puzzled about all this is i never had a problem before i did the Trans and i never even got a engine light when the Trans was broke.as far as the shift kit its one by a Mr shift in a blue and white box all get me detail later where my truck is.there is one thing i had done and that is i started the truck without the exhaust on it and the 02 sensor was not plugged in. just for a min i couldn't wait and wanted to here how it sounds loll. after that i disconnected the battery and hooked the exhaust up. drove it to autozone the done a code test and then cleared it. i then bout a scan tool and drove it home and got the reading i gave you.can i ohm test the governor sensor to see if its bad or??? they are costly $133.00 at auto zone for 1?also where can i find a book on this ??thanks again Tim all have more later Gordon

Answer
HEY GORDON,THE SENSORS CAN GO BAD JUST LOOKING AT THEM! I OWN AND WORK A TRANS SHOP AND HAVE HAD IT HAPPEN TO ME. THE OXYGEN SENSOR CODE NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT FIRST BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE! DOES THE OXYGEN SENSOR COME BACK IMMEDIATELY? THERE IS A GOVERNOR PRESSURE ,PRESSURE PORT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE TRANS JUST BEFORE WHERE THE OD UNIT BOLTS ON. REMOVE THE PRESSURE PLUG AND INSTALL A PRESSURE GAUGE. WHEN YOU START IT THERE SHOULD BE NO PRESSURE PRESENT UNTIL YOU START MOVING,APPROXIMATELY 1 PSI PER 1 MPH. IF YOU DO NOT MATCH THESE NUMBERS YOU HAVE GOV SENSOR OR SOLENOID PROBLEMS. REMEMBER THIS COULD ALL HAPPEN IF THE OXYGEN SENSOR CODE COMES BACK RIGHT AWAY(HARD CODE) i will check o my cost on gov sensor and solenoid to see if i can save you some money. THE PROBLEM WITH TESTING THE SOLENOID AND SENSOR IS THEY COULD TEST GOOD AND BE BAD.A PRESSURE TEST NEVER LIES. TALK TO YA SOON,TIM.
