Ford: Ford-Jaguar 1991 XJ6 VDP Low Battery indicator, radiator fan, square outline

Question
I apologize, Robert, but I recently lost my father's "Owner's Handbook" for this car.
Also, I am relying on his recounting, since I do not have access to the car itself right now.

The issue is a battery/alternator question.
My question is actually pretty simple.
I believe that a square OUTLINE light, red, on the dash exists to indicate that a low battery charge exists.  I am not sure if this "outline" is around the main alternator lamp or not.  And I am not sure whether this means a low Rate Of Charge - referring to the alternator connection - or to a low Actual Charge (i.e., Low Spec. Grav.) in the battery itself.
I know that 1991 slightly pre-dates Ford's invovement in Jaguar, but I'm hoping that you will know anyway.
Can you please clarify this?
BACKGROUND:
I replaced the battery last week, after it was found click-click dead, and unchargeable.  I was assured that the battery was not "cranked to death" by the angry wife.
To fix that problem, I used my car (Ford T-bird) to jump the dead battery - connected, in final desperation, terminals to terminals - I was completely unable to raise any charge at all in the Jaguar battery after forty minutes of just letting the donor engine run; and since removing the battery I've been unable to charge the thing with a charger.  From that I inferred - wishful thinking I suppose - that it was indeed the Jag battery that had gone bad after 5 years, and that a charging circuit issue was not to blame.  Hah!
Also, we do NOT have a run-on radiator fan problem.
Robert, many thanks to you.

Answer
You should remove the battery and complete a loadtest.
The charging system can be tested, alt output voltage on
this one has a range of14v-14.6v. The ECM and info sensors
cannot work after voltage goes under 5 volts. I would test
the relays and fuses. Also check all battery connections.
