Honda: rough idle, honda accord lxi, helm inc

Question
Hi, I have a 87 Honda Accord LXI and when I start the car cold it runs fine but if I turn the car off and restart it it idles really rough like it is going to stall in park and drive. If you turn on the AC the idle returns to normal but as soon as you turn the AC off it idles rough again. Whats wrong with my car?

Answer
Your first order of business should be to reset the ECU.  You can accomplish this by disconnecting the battery, or finding the fuse (most likely labeled "back-up").  Wait one minute with the fuse, or battery disconnected, then reconnect.  After about a day of driving, the computer will reset to your driving characteristics.  If you still have a problem, then check the IAC (idle air control) valve.  I cannot locate this part for you without your specific vehicle's service manual.  You can pick one up manufactured by Haynes or Helm Inc.  I belive Helm publishes the one that Honda's technicians use.  There is a complete detailed troublshooting section on the IAC valve.

Good luck, and sorry for the wait,

B.
