Mazda: replacement key, gauge face, mazda protege

Question
I have a 2001 Mazda Protege is there a chip in the key?
there is no alarm system

Answer
Mazda implemented the key chip security system in 2001.  It likely does have it, depends on the actual production date.  You should have a red indicator on the gauge face with the symbol of a "key" that lights up upon start up, if so you do have a key with a chip.  To get a new key you must have both keys that came with the car to program the new one.  If not a dealer will charge you to reprogram the system otherwise the car will not start with the new key.
