Mercedes: 1991 Mercedes 560 SEC Tranny dipstick location, clutch disk, mercedes 560 sec

Question
Hi, I am trying to find the tranny dipstick to check the fluid, but cannot seem to locate it. I think Reverse is going out, but hubby says I just need to check the fluid. (My thinking is that if it was low on fluid, it would be having trouble shifting in all gears, not just reverse). Thanks for your help! Stef

Answer
Stefanee,
The dip stick should be at the back of the engine next to the fire wall. It is difficult to see, but will have a pull ring with latch.
Low fluid will cause unusual shifting. If the clutch disk are burned this can cause slippage. If the fluid is not bright but cloudy and dark and has a burned odor, this is also an indication of slippage or component failure.
Some people have the mistaken opinion that replacing very dark fluid with new fluid will improve performance, however, new fluid has detergents that will sash of some of the particles that help with friction. Once these particles are gone the transmission gets worse rather than better.

Mercedes has specific procedures for changing fluid and you should use only Mercedes factor fluid or equivalent.
Good Luck
