Mercedes: 1998 mercedes transmission oil installation, change good luck, friction plates

Question
QUESTION: how do i install the transmission fluid in a 1998 mercedes transmission

ANSWER: Elmore,
If this is a Mercedes automatic transmission, it is vitally important that only Mercedes fluid be installed. Conventional fluid will destroy the transmission.YOu do not say what the mileage on the transmission is, but unless the vehicle already has shifting or leaking problems, I would not change the fluid.
With time and mileage the transmission has particulates that line the friction plates and bands. When fluid is changed the new fluid has detergents that wash off these deposits. There is more that a few people who have had a failure of the transmission withing 6 months of the change.
In any event, I would locate an independent Mercedes transmission specialist and have them check the transmission and do any change.

QUESTION: the transmission filter needs to be changed can it be changed at home or should it be done by a dealer?

Answer
Elmore,
How many miles on this vehicle? When if ever was the filter changed last?  I would have an independent Mercedes transmission specialist or dealer deal with any transmission service. The fluid is quite expensive at about 20.00 per liter. The dealer or transmission specialist should have the proper tools to flush out the old fluid and replace the filter and new fluid.
Good Luck
