Mercedes: Steering Wheel Locked, mercedes benz e class, mechanic shop

Question
QUESTION: Hi!! I own a 1996 Mercedes Benz E class and my mechanic has replaced the ignition switch and tumbler. The car will start but I cant get the Steering Wheel unlocked. Please help!!

Thank You,

Kendra Sturdevant

ANSWER: Hello Kendra,

Did the switch ever work properly in allowing the steering wheel to rotate freely?  The key controls a mechanical pal that engages the steering column shaft. Have you tried to shake the wheel from side to side while engaging the ignition switch.
Sometime the steering wheel axle cause friction against the pin. Rotate the wheel each direction and try to rotate the key. If the wheel has a tilt mechanism, make sure the column is strait.
I expect that you will need to get a lock smith to look at the vehicle. I would also phone the mechanic that did the work and ask what to do. If this is an immediate issue, it should be covered by mechanics warranty.

QUESTION: My car was towed to the mechanic shop and he replaced the ignition switch and tumbler. No the car has not been drove since the ignition switch has been replaced. The mechanic is a friend and told me to find out how to get the steering wheel unlocked.

Answer
As I stated earlier, The tumbler assembly may need to be removed and checked that the tumbler assembly is properly engaging the column lock. If the switch is in the column proper, it is probably not as difficult to check as it is in the dash mounted switch.
I spend two day pulling the switch and dropping the column on my 420SEL.
